To whom it may concern,
I seldom write letters of recommendation because my students are reluctant to request them. They are aware that they will not be lavishly praised for merely adequate achievement. Nevertheless, Blaine Pflaum did ask and I was pleased to oblige. You see, I can state without reservation that Blaine is one of the few truly outstanding students that I have encountered in my twenty years of teaching honors and advanced placement courses in mathematics and physics.

Blaine Pflaum has achieved an exceptionally high grade point average in a rigorous curriculum of honors and advanced placement courses including physics, chemistry, biology, statistics and calculus among others, and currently ranks at or near the top of his graduating class. He was a key member of our District Champion Academic Team. He is a National Merit Scholarship Finalist. These are surely laudable accomplishments, but not extraordinary among intelligent high school students in my experience. Here is what sets him apart: He has demonstrated creative mathematical thought, the synthesis of original concepts from familiar information. He has shown insight into the behavior of physical systems that occasionally surpasses the methods taught in my Advanced Placement Physics class. He has a talent for productive contemplation along with the maturity and tenacity required to develop his ideas fully. These are rare abilities.

I have discussed Blaine Pflaum's abilities with other science and mathematics faculty members. They unanimously concur with my evaluation of his talent and performance. An indication of the high esteem in which Blaine is held is his selection by the faculty of New Smyrna Beach High School as Outstanding Senior of the Class of 2006.

Blaine has an engaging manner and is admired and respected by faculty and students alike. He is a quiet leader whose friendship is cherished by all who know him.
I believe that Blaine Pflaum is a superior candidate for admission and is certain to be an outstanding university scholar. I recommend him without reservation.

Sincerely,
Michael S. Young Physics and Mathematics Teacher

ESSAY:    Please briefly state what the  scholarship would mean to you and why you want to further your education – use the space provided below and additional paper if needed.

For as long as I can remember, learning has been a key feature in my life. Even when I was very young I incessantly asked questions and almost literally read anything I could get my hands on.  As I have grown older I have always endeavored to fuel this natural curiosity and today I derive even more pleasure from increasing my knowledge than ever.  To me, learning is not a duty but a privilege that has become ever more valuable as I come to realize the depth of my unawareness even as I come to know more and more.  Thus, college is the next step on my path of education.

Although I am convinced that formal education is but a part of true learning, it is an important part.  Unfortunately, my days of free education are numbered, and I and my family will have to begin making sacrifices in order to pay for my continuing schooling in college and later in graduate school.  Being awarded this scholarship would mean that I would not have to pay so dear a price for my education, and could graduate with less debt on my shoulders.
