Ready to Offer Class
I am ready to offer a class from
http://www.wiredbrain.net
for students from anywhere - I have the site, I have the students
(or can get them), I have the content, ( use
http://www.altravista.digital.com/
with the search words pflaump synergy)
The class (could be) in
sociology, "Internet Consciousness", Human Development
on the web - social psychology, technology, economics, politics,
ecology as group projects then produce their own pages on the
site.
The students sign up with you, you collect the fees and keep the
records, I get the regular adjunct payment.
The students get a
site under /Golden_Globe in a topic group and produce their own
home pages.
The material is FTP to the site at volant in
California
( I am in Florida ) We will have, I believe soon, one of the
first
sites where the group can work together as if they were on a LAN
- all see the same text, talk on chat, conference, transfer files
directly from their PC to those in the group, and act as if they
are in a true workgroup (WGPO) and exchange system. For this to
work they will need to have a direct provider, PPP, Windows 95
( maybe Mac will work) (See Newbie page) See Bill Gates "
The
Empire Strikes Back"...also in Internet.htm in NEW
The class is not traditional - the grade is based on points, the
work is there for the whole world to see in their files. See
Class.htm
in /~synergy/NEW and material in /document/ethos.... Synergy
means
everyone benefits -

(or some other college university will offer the class)
RE: Starrts in first week of Jan. 1996,
Introduction to Sociology and/or Applied Social
Relations
American Federal Government Pflaum 3 Credits about
$140.00.(we don't know about out-of-state fees) Credit given by
any state college is good at any other college in Florida,
In-service teacher credit, and fully transferable. You have to
register by mail.
The point system (explained in detail in workbook).
You need 100 points (about one hours work = 1 point) to qualify
for the "A", but the instructor has to make a judgment
that the work is for good quality. (Having your work on the web
is very motivating). B is more than 80 points, C is more than
50. Points are earned by
) A review (not a summary) of the readings in
textbooks with a central theme ( up to 2 pts)
) An activity in the workbook (there are 15) which
requires group interactions. ( up to 2 pts)
) A personal journal on the theme. (2 pts)
Getting it together bonus - outside reading - (2 pts)
everyone in the group has their work in on time - plus extra-
articles.
A minimum of 12 units at a possible 8 pts each = 96
A maximum of 30 pts in bonus projects - graphics,
articles, special topics, films etc.
The work will on the home page under Sociology/group
name. Groups are less than seven people. American Federal
Government is the same structure but different books.
I am sure to say that having Dr. Pflaum as a teacher,
this will be an excellent class for any student. Dr. Pflaum's
methods of teaching are very good; his lectures are grade A and
the manner in which he covers the material is very inciteful.
I strongly recommend anyone who can read these words. Take this
class. You won't regret it.

ANNOUNCEMENTS of services: NEWS PAGE FIVE, this week
last week
ANNOUNCEMENTS of services:, this week last week NEW PAGE THREE
This is what I do here - (course outline, tests etc.)
and what I get out of it is all set from the beginning (it
doesn't work but we keep trying) I don't think that way. I talk
to them, and let them talk to each other: Lets see what they are
interested in, what they are good at, let's try to fit the
subject and the student (job and person) into a new personal
context. Make it up as we go along. That's what by tutor at LSE
did, the one-on-one, who are you and what are your interest and
needs. If you group so that they are all busy with group
activity, again with suggestions but little direction, then you
have time to do the one-on-one that really works (most of the
time). Small schools work this way.
But the disorder can get out of hand. No freedom
without responsibility ! But I figure they have had a lot of that
99% fixed systems that don't work - after all they don't know
anything (I mean anything much ) and can't do much. So it's not
working.
Maybe it did work but it doesn't, so there is some room to
experiment, I'm not messing with something that works. Motivation
is KEY (if you don't care, I don't care, and the system doesn't
care )
The educational material is under ETHOS - because values
is everything (not winning) but how you play the game
?
My pages are a mess - visit and help me get them into
SOME order..
The more I try the more scatter.. It's my nature
or the subject or iT JUST GETS OUT OF HAND - a high tolerance
for CHAOS.. maybe even a love - CREATIVITY comes from making odd
connections, thinking in new ways about old problems, and we sure
have enough of these.
.
Just a brief note to report that I visited the land
of Synergy and I loved your emphasis on ethics.
Incompetent as I am, I wasn't able to reformat one
other article I tried to read (lines went on forever, into the
Far East of the screen) so I had to withdraw until further
notice.
I'm doing some additional reading on Mosaic and will eventually
be back. (What are you doing with Mosaic ? Can you download ,
save file to, then open it in text editor, Peter )
Thanks, also, for your offer to post my possible
announcement on your page 2. If I ever succeed at putting
together the message,
I will let you know. (Two of the hardest things for me are
deciding what it is I really want to do and selling myself).

I've been thinking about this since you first offered
- and I had a sort of vision last night of what I might put
together for such a homepage, but I don't think I'm ready to do
it quite yet.
I can sure send ideas, but I want to learn this html
stuff myself. Do you use any special editor or just Word?
The
rule-checking editors seem like a worthy concept. (WORD 6 has
an free add on called MS Assistant - not very good but works It's
not hard LEARN BY DOING I find it has little faults like if you
quick save it turns the file into binary and the text is gone
! IF I CAN DO IT ANYONE CAN)
I can accept that if we're going to talk about
distance education, and the role of communication in development
and so fourth, your site is at least an example of how it might
be. So if we can get a discussion/ evaluation/ critique going
among these various folks (who have been awfully quiet this past
week! we could think about a group page! as a demo DE/
constructivist thing.
At this point, I'm not sure it's what the present
list is into, though.
But, I thought I asked to be removed from your
'combined' mailings - getting your stuff once is quite enough!
-meaning, I'm looking for the *thinking* that drives your
'narrowcast', not the results so much.

My style is working with groups that look up instructions for
the activities.
They have up to 15 hands-on active learning
experiences.
It's like lab reports.
I use a point system, (so many points for the grade) a
portfolios and journals for presentations ( few if any tests - of
course multi-choice test are easy but not very useful). Another
plan would be to split all income 60/40 (
The instructor gets 60%
but I cover all the communications cost) No classroom, no
utilities, no parking, just sign in (on a home page we provide
for registration ) pay your fee and get your grades and
transcripts (which we E-mail).
What is different about the class is the active participation
learning style that suits the INTERNET. Student will need AOL
or other service (Netcom, prodigy, NETSCAPE PPP, CompuServe, etc)
There are now thousands of on ramps and millions with web
browsers.
