The Internet as a life form: Information; Energy and entropy

Hello: Long time no see or email. I read with great interest the new life form article and went to your home page to read more with the links you put to it. Fascinating. Are there other sites dealing with this?

Cybernetica is a good one I know, but this thread interests me a lot. Please check Earth Portals if you have not been there in a while, I have a lot of new material bulging at 17 MBs now.

    http://www.earthportals.com/earthportals Thanks, Willard

Yes, AT&T does work if you by pass their software ( a year out of date is real old ) and do a dial up connection in Windows 95. SPRY also works pflaump@cflpflaump@cflpflaump@cflpflaump@cfl.rr.comONT>

The Internet contains systems and subsystems of older and newer forms, people, social systems, regulations, habits, institutions, technologies; PC's, networks, software, communications systems, modem ( or digital connection to replace the analog )s, UNIX languages, Visual Basic C+++, OLE, telephone systems, satellites, libraries, gophers, and hundreds of such elements being regrouped into a ecological system call the Internet.

What is life ? What is the purpose of life ? Well first of all to manage entropy. Life and matter are all forms of information. We can start with negative entropy called energy, in the form of motion, the yin and yang of creation, motion and the need to stop moving and come to rest. Concentrations of energy form the simple elements starting with hydrogen, the positive forces generating a negative balance, protons and electrons in motion.

The standard model theory of elementary particles postulated the existence of six kinds of quarks, all of which have been experimentally confirmed. (See note at the end)

Categories: Body structures, Communities, and dynamics of change.

What are the building blocks of life forms ? Exploding Novas start the creation of the library we call home-o-stasis; an environmental life form. Life is made up of the letters and phonemes from the simple and complex elements, sun light, atmosphere and water that form our planet earth. Words are organic molecules, sentences are made up of compounds, and books are the genetic information of life in its many forms.

How is the information super-highway a life form ? Information is patterns of order against a background of noise.

The information of living things contains the patterns of colonies, collectives, synergy in action. Life starts with Mitochondria, entities than can transform energy. Eukaryote, cells with nuclei, contain Mitochondria. Information is collected into a more complex composites.

Evolution is the results of positive and negative feedback. Individuals survive and reproduce as parts of systems.

The collective action of organic communities reacts and changes the environment.

The unintentional responses of organic matter change the information content. Rain forests produce rain, the evaporation of ground water by leaves increases cloud cover and effects weather and climate, the contents of the air and the average temperature. Positive and negative feedback loops sometimes escalate out of control until they collapse or reach a dynamic punctuated equilibria.

    Area ONE: BASIC BODY structures:

Before the Cambrian extinction ( 450 million years ago ) there were hundreds of basic body designs. Only a few dozen survived, one of which was one using internal bones and tubes, becoming fish, reptiles, dinosaurs, birds, and mammals.

The basic body style of the inter-net includes the backbone, communications protocols, the web structure, modem ( or digital connection to replace the analog )s, and the way we connect and how fast.

The pattern is not fixed. Cable, wireless, and other body forms are possible, such as the Internet terminal.

Regulation and legislation are part of the body styles issues.

    Area two: COMMUNITIES:

Ecological communities are complex dynamic systems that have many counter-intuitive relationships. For example, the role of the matrical elephant in the group, provides memory, experience and leadership. Fungi are critical to many plants in the use of soil minerals. Plants and insects evolve together. Alligators produce the water holes that support fish, that feed birds, that support predators, on up the food chain. Ecological survival is not simply the "survival" of the fittest but how communities fit into the complex and often unstable dynamics of whole systems.

    Communities and interfaces:

The food chain; Who is eating whom in

The Wild Kingdom or America today ? Also all these applications depend on each other - synergy

Search: AltaVista, Yahoo, and the other search engines form connections between communities of web pages.

Message transfer: http - editors - ftp - chat - Sites, pages, Gophers, archie, e-mail, mail-lists, newgroups are styles of message transport.

Storage and filing: Access, data base management, BBS, message strings, are part of saving and finding materials.

On-line services: Compuserve, America-on-Line, Microsoft Network, PBS, NPR, Time Warner, NBC -

    Nodes and Niches:

    The media and the message; includes providers of web space;

The Market place - catalogs -

Digital on Netscape Community systems that promote virtual office, classroom, laboratory, retail store, groups that should integrate with Publishing, Merchant and other Applications.

    Area three: DYNAMICS of change:

What is done by whom and how:

The history of evolutionary biology is long periods of boredom and short periods of terror and mass extinctions.

The dynamics of change have been climate change, invasions ( People, rats and goats ), meteors and astroid, and the dynamics of communities themselves.

The balance of cooperation and competition suddenly change.

There is a random or elements of chaos like the weather.

Complex systems have counter-intuitive interactions ( Blau and Scott in Organizational theory, Forester in Industrial dynamics, Senge in Organizational Learning ) Starr fish on reefs, elephants and trees, people and large game, the rain forests, spotted owls, sea turtles, have second and third and fourth level repercussions in dynamic communities.

Netscape and mosaic is an example of dynamic shifts in the ecology of the Internet. Wal-mat computer systems tied to providers is another.

NOTE: Particles are now grouped according to the force that usually controls their interactions. Hadrons (strong nuclear force) include hyperons, mesons, and the neutron and proton. Leptons (electromagnetic and weak forces) include the tau, muon, electron, and neutrinos. Bosons (particlelike objects associated with interactions) include the photon and the hypothetical carriers of the weak force and of gravitation.

The weak nuclear force is evident in such radioactive or particle-decay reactions as alpha decay (the release of a helium nucleus from an unstable atomic nucleus).

RE: SOP - How "they" don't get it !

The top-down, bureaucratic systems don't work when the top knows less than the bottom. In professional high-skilled occupations administrative systems can only "be helpers" not commanders.

    The separation of thinking (

The bosses do the thinking ) and doing ( the workers do the doing ) works at McDonald's when there are simple repetitive tasks that can be organized in a science of management. In public schools, colleges, technical applications, science, and most modern skilled work; the administration is little or NO help, they get in the way and screw things up.

They try to set up SOP ( Standard Operational Procedures ) then inspections, exams, evaluations and regulations in a ecology with a high levels of uncertainty and change. It doesn't float. It drives everyone crazy.

The issue is politics not production, habits and prejudices not knowledge or judgment. People worked their way into power and can't give it up. HELP I AM THE BOSS AND I CAN'T stop giving orders, creating forms and Sops. Otherwise, I will be downsized - A model of organization that is bottom up and the management staff serve the operational types is upside down, inside out, with a different psychological set and different climate. I give up - the leadership of colleges, schools, big companies are not going to turn themselves upside down and they will NEVER reform. It's childish to expect reform and leadership from the top. What works is new life forms, competition, little groups that are faster and smarter.

    Dr. Peter Pflaum

    RE: A matter of perspective;

    We were discussing the

Internet as a new life form.

Where there is life, there can be sudden change, there is growing order out of chaos, there are more complex inter-relationships and effective use of the environment for energy, reproduction and the biological systems that can run up hill.

Matter is only a temporary form of information, energy and matter are forces in some organized shape or form before they becomes disorganized and random again. From a random nothing there was a "big bang" and the system has been using this energy to organize itself, expand and run, until it runs down again. Life forms take shape on the back of this free energy - from bacteria, plants and on up the food chain.

The problem is we exist at the top of the chain and have a hard time with prospective - seeing the forest for the trees.

Niles Eldredge along with Stephen Jay Gould describe the history of life on this planet as evolving with "Punctuated Equilibria" Long periods of boredom with sudden extinctions and bursts of tumult and change.

Rather than the Darwinian smooth steady progress from simple to complex, driven by shifts in the central tendency of populations, characterized by the survival of the best adapted; there are quanta changes that intensify elimination and creation.

The survival of the fittest is greatly augmented by random elections and chance. Species; happen, then form a gene pool we call a life form.

The matter of perspective is when lost in the forest to have more than a view of trees. Life is organic collectives rather than creatures in-side their own skin.

    SHAMBHALA (

The Noetic Society ) and Charles Tart, In Waking Up, overcoming the obstacles to human potential, to functional families, to organization learning, to better schools, communities, politics, religion and life is seeing beyond our own skin, raising the level of awareness. This is what science and religion and education is all about.

The earth does revolve around the sun in a expanding Universe of 12 billion light years, the Earth is 4 - 5 billion years old, life for 3 + billion but nothing much happened until 500 million years ago, then 350 million there was a big bust of life forms, most of which died out in the Permian extinction ( 245 million ), then end of the dinosaurs ( 65 million ), humans of some type 2 + million or more, modern type only about 25,000.

There were a 1/2 billion people in ancient times, one billion by 1650, the next billion about when my mother was born, the next when I was born ( about 35 years later ), four billion about 1960's, five in the 80's, 6 now, so from 4 million years, to 300 years, to 30 years, to 20 years per billion and we now add more than a billion each decade - a new Mexico each year: ( and they all want to drive) it took a million years to lay down the fossil fuel we use each day. We need to have more prospective.

Evolutionist make no reference to the

social-biology of Edward Wilson's multi-member colonies and synergy of collectives but the image emerges of genes as the driving force in the complex patterns of life. Since the survival of the species is a collective, ecological issue, individual superiority is not very important relative to the species adaptation to it's energy sources, ( food, water and heat ) and changes in the environment.

    James Lovelock in

The Ages of Gaia, uses the laws to thermodynamic to set the scene. Molecular biology is an information processing systems, evolutionary biology is the nature of creatures and their connections with information, and the physics which explains everything.

The first law of thermodynamics is the conservation of matter and energy. Nothing comes from nothing and nothing goes nowhere.

The second law is dis-symmetry, hot objects cool but cold object never spontaneously become hot, water does not run up hill. Life is a process of collecting energy for the temporary reason of survival, having fun and reproduction. Edwin Schrodinger little book on " What is Life" looks at "aperiodic crystals" that move upstream against the flow of time. Life is improbabilily low entropy. Claude Shannon information theory is that there is a loss of data but interference, noise never becomes meaning. Life is dependent on the use of external energy can be described in John Von Neumann mathematical model of entropy.

So the Internet is a life form and a form of intelligent information. A complex crystal. Maybe it can help us understand the general theory of everything - physics, it's daughter chemistry, it's complex cousin biology, and evolution of the universe and our place in it. A general field theory must be made by more than one mind, machine, or time and place. It takes synergy.

RE: Love of Learning ( and teaching )

Have we completely forgotten the love of learning and teaching?

A turned-on, charged-up, fired-up, excited group on a voyage of discovery, in the office, factory or classroom. Has the dead hand of the "system" of meaningless and depressing bureaucracy wiped out all traces of the adventure of learning in ourselves, our children and their teachers ?

Knowledge ( learning ) is information plus + understanding. If the news is any example there is a lot of information ( I doubt that it is - just hype to up the rating ) we rather not have this trash if words are of no value to anyone and meaningless to most.

There was a time when the news " illuminated the events of our time", when http://www.wiredbrain.net/documents/ JOURNAList loved knowledge ( my Father Irving Peter was one ) and they could explain the meaning behind the surface of events. Now they are talking heads, media personalities, cartoon characters with good teeth.

These are five habits of mind for the lovers of knowledge, the good, the true, and the beautiful. It is strange the Rush Limbaugh can say he is on a "restless search for the truth" with talent on loan from GOD" when he is a smooth provider of caned half baked ideological solutions to complex problems - the environment, the economy and international competition, the budget, social welfare, etc. Does he have any ideas - not really just slogans and fast talk. He is good at making fun and poking holes in knee-jerk liberals who do the same on the other side. This talking head becomes discourse where reality, truth, and even consistency doesn't matter.

Here are the five habits ( of Seven Stages ) in the path of knowledge:

    1. examine one's own views (abstracting somewhat from the self)

A necessary distance - beyond ego ( You all know if someone is so into themselves and their own problems they can't even get started in solving THE problem ) I have this problem with my wife in abundance and can't seem to solve it at all. She is so concerned with herself, and her world - but then that's my point of view ?

    2. seek out alternative views (understand before being understood)

Maybe we need an objective view point - How to make this emotional situational more rational - not by avoiding it or having a fight but some how to get to some level of understanding of what is ME, what is THOU and what is out there ..

    3. look for supporting evidence for viewpoints

We can go too far in being objective - because this is about the cave of shadows - we are shadow boxing with false /images of reality, ghosts and demons.. fears and needs and wants and ME and THOU, and what you think I think of what you may have said something terrible and mean but what did you mean ??? Let get real..

    4. look for the big picture

So I love you, need your personal - down-home and personal attention and support. My children go to a little school ( 13 students from K-8 ) and we went to graduation for two 8 th graders last night.

The teacher is off today on a new mission. We all cried how much she loved our children and how much they loved her. Can any system replace love, caring, being down-home and personal -

    5. look for meaning

I am not loving enough - I do not understand or care for others - I want thing my own way - I get in my own way all the time, I am careless and foolish - I need hope and care and love - I AM HUMAN - I have a soul, a spirit beyond this world - in the world but not of it - I have a higher meaning in life beyond material things - First love god then all else will have some meaning - but without the love of GOD ( the great spirit ) the universal truth, the good and the beautiful then how can I love this person ? How can I love myself in the right way ? People are a pest but contain the spark of the universal spirit of turtles, of sea mist, of bells that ring in the night.

    LOOKING FOR PARTNERS.

In case you think there is anything new here:

Perhaps the greatest educator of the 17th century was Jan Komensky, the Protestant bishop of Moravia, better known by his Latin name, Comenius. His work in education brought him invitations to teach throughout Europe. He wrote a widely read, profusely illustrated textbook for the learning of Latin, called

The Visible World (1658; trans. 1659). In his Great Didactic (1628-32; trans. 1931) he emphasized the furthering of the educational process by stimulating the pupil's interest and by teaching with reference to concrete things rather than to verbal descriptions of them. His educational objective can be summed up in the phrase on the title page of the Great Didactic, "teaching thoroughly all things to all men." Comenius's efforts on behalf of universal education earned him the title of Teacher of Nations.

The most influential of all the followers of Rousseau was the Swiss educator Johann Pestalozzi, whose ideas and practices influenced schools on every continent.

The principal aim of Pestalozzi was to adapt the method of teaching to the natural development of the child. To attain this objective, he worked toward the harmonious development of all the faculties (head, heart, and hand) of the learner. Among the other influential educators of the 19th century were Friedrich Froebel of Germany, the father of the kindergarten, which was introduced in America in 1856; Johann Herbart, also of Germany, who introduced the principles of psychology and philosophy into the science of education, and whose ideas spread to the U.S. toward the end of the century; Horace Mann and Henry Barnard, the foremost American educators, who brought to the U.S. the doctrines of Pestalozzi and other European educators; the British philosopher Herbert Spencer, who advocated scientific knowledge as the most important subject matter to be taught in school; and Bishop Nikolai Grundtvig of Denmark, whose educational ideas became the basis for the folk high school movement.

    Montessori:

At the beginning of the century, education was greatly influenced by the writings of the Swedish feminist and educator Ellen Key. Her book

The Century of the Child (1900) was translated into many languages and inspired progressive educators in various countries. Progressive education was a system of teaching based on the needs and potentials of the child, rather than on the needs of society or the precepts of religion. It had existed in idea and in fact under other names throughout history and had appeared in varying forms in different parts of the world. Among the influential progressive educators were Hermann Lietz and Georg Kerschensteiner of Germany, Bertrand Russell of England, and Maria Montessori of Italy. Especially influential in the U.S., and even on a worldwide scale, was the American philosopher and educator John Dewey.

The activity program, which was derived from the theories of Dewey, stressed the educational development of the child in terms of individual needs and interests. It became the major method of instruction for many years in elementary schools of the U.S. and other countries.

After the Russian Revolution of 1917, the USSR was an object of educational interest. Particularly after 1957, when the Soviet Sputnik, the first artificial earth satellite, was launched into space, indicating the advanced state of Soviet technological learning, Soviet schools attracted large numbers of foreign visitors, especially individuals from developing countries. Contributing to the international interest in Soviet education were the educational theories and practices arising out of Marxist-Leninist ideology, as well as the work of Anton S. Makarenko, an exponent of the rehabilitation of juvenile delinquents and of collective education.
