The art of government has the same root in semantics as cybernetics (

Dr. Norbert Wiener 1948 ) in the concept of the steersman on the ship of state - guidance of the Polis to safe harbor.

The internal control system either can be on auto pilot or under conscious control and direction. How much can training and education, positive /images and experiences replace infant programming ? So how much control do we have ? Are we responsible * control our ability to respond ? Do we really have choices ? Things - institutions, politics, communities, values, families, business, money, congress are "out of their minds" , living in a dream world, walking in their sleep ? ( Or is it just my over active imagination

Bio-politics, education and the Chemical-behavioral paradigm: Domination and Liberation.

It is good practice to design organizational, political, educational, training, and commercial activity with knowledge of the "newest" findings of social psychology, and the most "ancient" methods of character development. In times of change, it become necessary to think of ways to promote "reprogrammed" individuals and systems. We are in the area of great change as we move from industrial models of domination to information systems and cooperation. Fundamental change is not so simple and the evolution of culture has never been so fast. We need new techniques to deal we this kind of challenge.

There is no solution "inside the box", we have to look beyond our culturally defined ruts. (SEE Bernie Siegel, Deepak Chopra, Ernest Rossi, Carl Simonton and others

on Consciousness, Awareness, and Mind-Body Healing by Marcus S. Robinson, D.C.H.

Candace Pert, interviewed in Bill Moyers' "Healing and the Mind" (Doubleday 1995 based on the PBS series) was Chief of Brain Bio- chemistry at the NIH. She discovered new types of psychoactive drugs that are produced by the brain, endorphins, which means "morphines from within", that are similar to opiates taken as drugs.

The physical matter changes with personality. It goes both ways. " the mind is not just in the brain but is part of a communications network throughout the brain and body. You can start to see how physiology can effect functioning on a moment- to-moment, hour-by-hour, day-today basis, much more that we give it credit for." If people live in an industrial, factory system, where domination, power, and control are the commanding social conditions, they become physically different from people who work and live in an information, learning organization.

The workers of Detroit have different bio-chemical systems than those of San Jose and the silicon valley. Different groups of voters have different chemical reactions to the symbols, sights and sounds of political messages.

As a neuroscientist Dr. Pert was `secretly' interested in consciousness and became aware that the immune system produces a number psychosomatic (psyche = mind, soma = body ) chemical transmitters.

The internal information system is a biochemical, electrical network.

The messenger peptides inform and stimulate cells to produce or not produce proteins, divide or not divide, and the direct the roles of different sub-systems in complex strategies of growth, protection, and mood.

The fight-flight (stress response) is only one of many sub-systems. (Herbert Benson)

Consciousness involves every cell of the body.

Try to get your "mind" around this concept. Thinking and awareness is NOT a computer chip but a chemical soup, dynamic interactions on bio-chemical networks, not programmed but conditioned by genes and the physical, social environment. Genetic context is interactive with `ecological' emotional and social states. Neuro-peptides and their receptors are emotions.

This new science opens doors to "body knowledge", intuition, and the deep programming of socialization. Television and diet impact who we are. Commercials, sex and violence, effect mood by way of organic chemistry. Bio-politics speaks to the production of Neuro-transmitters.

The peptides are the material manifestation of the psyche and the "soul". Anger, love, fear, awe, depression, joy, are physical and material body reactions. Actors that play happy people have different blood chemistry from actors that play angry people. Thinking makes it happen, body chemistry effects our thinking. Psychol-therapy, or traditional education maybe able to change our patterns of thought to produce new chemical balances, but its very difficult and unlikely. But if drugs can change the chemistry - bingo our own attitude changes.

"People with multiple personalities sometimes have extremely clear physical symptoms that vary with each personality. One personality can be allergic to cats while another is not. One personality can be diabetic and another is not."

Neuro-peptides are the biochemical units of emotion. Emotions almost always set the context for behavior. Perhaps, industrial and social training need to take place with sets of conditions that produce the responses needed. Construction, decoration and graphics, sights and sounds, diet, motion, all can contribute. Maybe also "soma", drugs that produce a sense of security, well- being and hope.

This is the base of our Sufi program.

The old systems of power and top-down authority (Male domination systems) have become more and more dysfunctional. Public schools are the great hold-outs of "communist", state bureaucracies that ignore market forces. IBM, GM, and the other industrial giants are making way for smaller, faster, more flexible cooperative systems of enterprise.

The US congress with it's domination by old men, committee chairmen, no longer works. Big "communications" mega-media is coming apart at the edges.

?)TOO BIG - TOO MUCH CHANGE - TOO FAST and there is nothing we can do about it ! We can never understand the relationship between ourselves and the universals ?

There are many simple actions that will make our lives and our schools, or families, or communities, or nation better but be are frozen - unable to move -First we need the sense to make sense - the freedom to make choices - I have said for years - first you need a system capable of reform - then reform will happen. Public Education as now structured so as to be incapable of reform, so is the national political process, so are most of us.

RE:

The fifth wave of MONEY and Business and Education and Politics: A new discipline

FIRST:

The new conceptual framework or paradigm: We have to

wake-up, get in touch, with "

The dreamtime" -

The myths, traditions, customs, laws, that define "who are you" - and create the law - customs that define us as social (civilized) humans * the Way of the First Self (of many selves) is Tribal.

The economies use barter - up and down - one dimension. (

The Last Wave of Peter Wier)
SECOND WRITING, GOLD and silver coins - right and left, two dimensions: Civilization is an abstraction - the common illusions of belief systems of Church and State - Kings and priests.."

The ancient regime" *

The modern world is a reaction to the "caste" system * demands some freedom of choice - THIRD PRINTING, Banks and corporations,

The Dutch about the 15th Century, in and out - third dimension - private enterprise - Freemasons and clock works as a model of the universe, solid state physics -

The rational modern world rejected the old order and almost all the "spirit" and "body knowledge" and got itself into a value free science - What ever worked ? Logic positivism ? Good grief - clearly going too far - FOURTH Electric phones, Radio, TV, telex, made possible Central Banks, modern money and banking, rediscounting and the multiplier effect. (19th Century) Time is the fourth dimension.

The electrical, chemical, mass production systems - mass production factories and scientific management * Where our minds are formed and institutions are set in their ruts.. Institutions take on their own culture -

The sum becomes more than the parts -

The Man in the Grey Business Suit - Blue Shirt IBM - Where is the freedom of choice ? Where are the values that make for honest human relationships and real quality ? Deming and Dewey knew the human pain and suffering cause the loss of connections between thinking and doing: the is the "new" old order.

FIFTH,

COMPUTERS and the Internet: Lateral Quantum on netural networks (electronic) assets * monetary debt ( like mortgages, third and fourth level complex networks of instruments such as futures and options)

The fifth dimension, or fifth discipline is about wholes - the sum being more than the parts -

RE: Bio-culture

Stage One:

Tribal,

In the 300,000 years we evolved as a species in troops of 80 souls or less. Troop "culture" became the critical criteria for survival. Over time, the central tendency of individual character became biological in tune with the environment and the society.

The bushmen and Australian aborigines are examples where the body-mind, body-mind transmitters, the immune system, and the organization of the uncommitted cortex become synergist with the tribal customs, beliefs, traditions, that make up tribal "law". While we are all the product of our culture, the biological base is little understood. As Ed Wilson's called it "the groves" or patterns of or body-mind, genealogy, chemistry are social and cultural. That is the nature of man.

Stage two,

Urban - During the 30,000 years of the agricultural, urban revolution, "modern man" added cultural and material technology in a more conscious way. Writing, coins, kings and priests, raised the level of awareness to the human potential beyond the tribal "self".

The education of leaders was "in the world, but not of the world", so they could see beyond the limits of their own culture. It is always a mistake to believe in your own propaganda - divine kings have to know the reality of their divinity or they become crazy, and can not tell the map from the territory - what is "real" and what is popular illusion. Who is the real wizard of OZ, because the wizard must knows he is not the mighty OZ, but only some one who controls the leavers.

Stage three,

from the renaissance on, the growing hubris, arrogant, and pride that man was the measure of all things and was not limited by god, nature, culture and tradition.

The result was the vast expansion of European power, capitalism, bureaucracy, democracy, the rebellion of the American Colonies, the French Revolution, Marxism, Fascist, and evangelical religion ( a direct contact with a personal god ).

The biological limits were pushed but not repealed. It was not nice to mess with "Mother" nature.

The war gods, aggressive, and pushy won a temporary spurious victory. Dr. Faustus made his deal with the devil.

Stage four

,

the firstand second industrial revolutions through electic and chemical stages, money and banking, insurance, corporations, income taxes, social security, and the whole complex of cultural and material artifacts of the modern world. ( You can see how complex this social web is from the experience of the USS-was, without real commercial law, banks, property, insurance, et al. Big was better, god was on the side of the best armed and trained regiments. Our mind-sets, models, assumptions, institutions all come from the industrial age.

Stage Five,

the information revolution - quantum nodes on neural networks, and the death of civilization as we know it. Civilization was based on the biological traditions of people requiring fundamental absorption of the "dreamtime"; the customs, folkways, traditions, beliefs, laws, religions which make up the integration of individuals into a social web of life within a ecology. More then "programming" or tapes or video tapes biological absorption is in the body-mind, the blood, the very fiber of being itself.

The biological tradition relates to all life, and connects the individual and society to universals. This is the

COVENANT

. *When you break the covenant between the society or individual and "mother" nature, the law falls away and all hell breaks loose - said the prophet.

The loss of faith in the traditional authority and belief structure is what happened to the Seneca ( Tony Wallace ) - then the white buffalo and dooms day cults - Buchanan, Evangelist, Flat taxers and White racist, the mad search for biological roots in the dream time, when the tradition no longer "works", and authority fails. If we are post industrial, post civilization - then what ?

My vision is not hopeful.. islands (with walls and gates) of electronic connections - artificial intelligence without the feel of blood, of breath, of heat or cold, of love or hate, of dreams or passions, unconnected to the billions of years of creation, not really knowing their clan territory, having no sense of place, no roots.

Who are you

?

You are slim mold, fish, plants, the ocean in the living blood. We need a new tribalism to balance the abstraction * the BS, the commercial amoral technology...We need a Handsome Lake, with a vision. (See the Last Wave of Peter Weir's A wonderful film )

RE:

The Vision Thing:<

People keep asking: What is going on here. First
I have no fixed doctrine, or even clear goals. If you benefit from what I have done then I have done something, I can be pleased.
Otherwise it is sound and fury meaning nothing - If you can help by letting me know what is useful then you will help yourself and others who visit in the future. Maybe this is a new form of literature, a new form of communications, a new form of knowing, a new form of teaching and learning, maybe it's a new life form that takes shape as it evolves, maybe it's trash, maybe it's wisdom, maybe it's hope, maybe it's hopeless ?
Maybe it's my EGO blast, maybe its beyond or above or into or out of my mind, wise fool or foolish ? A GURU I am not! It is a new world order that does not fit the internalized models and assumptions of the industrial empire. It's radical, flexible, profound, difficult, and complexity human. It starts with a vision, a non-verbal knowing of non-self, existence and reality beyond self.

The fourth force comes from awareness of the "roundness" of reality.

The three classical attitudes are:

THE MONK,

control of passions or ID,

THE

YOGI,

control of ones thoughts or EGO,

THE BODY-MIND

and the FOURTH WAY-

"New Age", Humanistic psychology, trans-personal, ecological, motivational "positive thinking", peak performance, which are all aspects of the same elephant. In

Fritz Perls terms:

Chicken dropping

Cow dropping (BS) -

Elephant dropping

-

profound but empty, false talk, the news, politics and hollow religion - profound pretenses -

The

State of the Union

The ancient Sufi tale of the elephant in the dark (or blind men and the elephant) is about people's limits of awareness. Everyone perceives and different aspect of "reality" and then argues with others who have grasped a different piece. Higher awareness requires an altered states of consciousness.

THE WAY YOU SEE THE PROBLEM IS THE PROBLEM

.

Another tale is the

lion in the pit told in books by Idries Shah Tales of the Dervishes, Sufi teaching stories and in the Sufis.

You try to show the lion the way of escape but he doesn't perceive the nature of his condition and situation. He eats the people that come to help him. People do not take kindly to enlightment.

There is no good deed that goes unpunished.

There is an integration of modern physics, medicine, psychology, philosophy, and ancient ways of knowing.

The vision comes from Handsome Lake, the

Tony Wallace "

The Death and Rebirth of the Seneca"

The covenant has been broken - society, the traditional ways of knowing, authority has been lost. Things are coming apart and people don't seem to know "what is going on".

Stages:

Ken Wilber,

The Spectrum of Consciousness:

ONE

(Baby Awareness) Me and non-me, sense of time, here and not here, see, hear, touch, smell, and eat.

TWO:

(Infant Awareness) Thinking in words and /images, focused impulses and emotions: Ages one to three.

THREE:<

:

(Elementary Symbolic Awareness)

The unique nature of humans is advanced symbol identification and naming in context of a social language: (ages three to six)

FOUR:

(Junior Role Awareness) Construction of "rules", Roles, Acting the part, Pretense, the BLUE water stage, construction of the "life Rafts", defenses, body amour, and habits "which start as fine as spider's webs but with practice become heavy chains, iron cables which define the limits of our being," these chains were constructed in the "industrial age".

The "information age" requires breaking the habits of mass production, top down, bureaucratic consciousness, inside and outside.

FIVE:

( High School, apprenticeship, emotional/rational awareness ) Introspection, deductive reasoning, and social acceptable behavior ( by peer groups and commercial interests ).

The YELLOW earth stage of rationalization, projections, transference, dogma, beliefs, superstitions, fancies: based on passions, wants, needs, desires, EGO gratification. Society demands this level of development but no more, there are social pressures to keep the "masses" as factory workers and not move their awareness beyond this norm. to wake up the people to "what is really going on" is a subversive activity.

SIX:

( EDUCATED: http://www.wiredbrain.net/documents/JOURneyman,

The Liberal Arts, wake-up) Traditionally reserved for the "ruling class", Humanities, More integrated thinking, a wider prospective, the greater good, synthesis, connections, relationships, were necessary for leadership, maybe even some body-mind awareness. Poetry, the visual arts, music, dance, philosophy, modern science and math, open the doors of perception beyond the limits of "home town" culture.

The RED Zone, because the dangers and fear of freedom, most people do now have the security to feel comfortable with open horizons and new ideas, cultures, changes, possibilities.

SEVEN:

( MASTERS Craftsmen Level, KNOWLEDGEABLE, understanding, pay attention:) almost wise, profound: Some are born to independence, some achieve independence, some have independence thrust upon them).

The BROWN Ground is the deep down sense of being OK, self actualization.

The "feeling" not a thought that you can trust and believe in yourself, you are the perfect creation of a loving G- D, you are not the reflection in others eyes and DEPENDENT on others reactions, but have gained freedom to respond by your free choice. Knowledge is the connection between thinking and doing, information plus understanding of what is really going on beyond the information given.

EIGHT:<

Doctor's level - (In the old crafts guild sense not our corrupted educational certificates) Psychic, mystic, awareness of spirits, ghosts, mysteries, demons, love, hate, body-mind connections - NOT independent of ego, or information, knowledge, experience, common sense, but an expansion.

There are a lot of "fakes", wizards, con-artist, crazies, who sell short cuts to "wisdom", faith, trans-personal spiritual, transforming experience, BUT...BUT... BUT...

Level nine and ten

involve the love affair between man and G-D, when the lover and the beloved become one, a interesting character with great EGO control, making space between action and reaction called choice. Having a strong personality ( In the world but not of it )

The concept is mostly expressed in the heavenly music of the spheres, the sweet harmony of the universe, the poetry of the soul; " we are the stuff of which stars and dreams are made", - a mystery in a puzzle in an enigma - and feel comfortable with different ways of knowing and not knowing.

The many "selves" become integrated not overwhelmed or destroyed, the repertoire becomes wider - Rumi, Mozart, Franklin, FD Roosevelt, ( all freemasons) and in our day: Herbert Benson, Joseph Campbell. et al

Norman Cousins,

Wellness Bib Dean Ornish, Alexander Lowen, Steven Covey, Victor Frankl, Ken Wilber, A.H. Maslow, Charles Tart, - People who live in the world, not just practice human potential - but do something to make the world a better place, Dr Salk, Pauling, Bronsky, who do you suggest as approaching the "complete person", focused on goals, active, energized, balanced, centered, understanding, patient, soulful, mindful, spiritual, loving, a "great human being" maybe Judith my Grandmother ? Does not have to have a certificate in "human potential" or do yoga - these are means not ends and the ends can be achieved in many ways.

The heros of Yugoslavia, the saints of Samolia, the Doctors without Walls, (Medicin san Frontier)

The children ground, (le Terre L'Enfant) go to where angels fear to tread and you find them - Central Africa, South East Asia, Urban Schools - Our mothers ? Clearly missing in the political leadership because the system does not allow greatness, courage, honesty, character..From: Elin Whitney-Smith elin@tmn.com

Thank you.Tina Bell tdbell@ctc.csustan.eduPeter, Have you thought about the decimal system? It is essentially the outline form of organizing essays you probably learned in school but instead of using a mixed bag of indices (Roman numerals, capital letters, small letters, numbers, etc) you simply use a decimal system. IBM is probably the most famous organization to completely adopt the system.1. /documents/pathos/ 1.1 General features of this category1.2 http://www.wiredbrain.net/documents/pathos/ in everyday life1.2.1

The psychology of transformative life ...2. Ethos ...etc. I think the best feature of this approach is its openness: categories can be added at any level, at any time, using a completely logical extention of the system in use. A close second is the intuitive character of the system: knowing little about it, most people working with such material can usually find their way through the maze quite easily.IMPORTANT: take the time to give some thought to those "highest level" categories in the system.

They cannot easily be subsumed under still higher-level categories: all other numbers then have to change - just the kind of thing one would like to avoid with a good filing system.Ross powell@direct.ca between the mountains and the sea...

The Universe Story, by Brian Swimme and Thomas Berry? Also, Swimme has a video series called Canticle to the Cosmos - any one of the 12 will give you a good feel for his work.

The central idea is that humans need a "creation story" - a new cosmology, that post-Einsteinian, post Heisenberg science can now provide - in order to reconnect with nature on a sacred level and release the energy that we need to evolve to the next stage.

They see us having to choose between an ecozoic era or a technozoic era - the former based on new cosmology/deep ecology and the latter that continues our erroneous view that we are

out side nature and can continue exploiting the world's resources for our exclusive benefit.Anyway - highly recommended stuff. A quantum leap beyond the fine work done by

CONFUCIAN ANALECTS Confucius

1

The Master "Is it not

pleasant to learn with a constant perseverance and application?

"Is it not

delightfu l to have friends coming from distant quarters?

"Is he not a man of

complete virtue, who feels no discomposure though men may take no note of him?"

The philosopher Yu said, "

They are few who, being filial and fraternal, are fond of offending against their superiors.

There have been none, who, not liking to offend against their superiors, have been fond of

stirring up confusion.

"

The superior man bends his attention to what is radical. That being established, all practical courses

naturally grow up. Filial piety and fraternal submission,-are they not the root of all benevolent actions?"

The Master said, "Fine words and an insinuating

appearance are seldom associated with true virtue."

The philosopher Tsang said, "I daily examine myself on three points:-whether, in transacting business for others, I may have been not faithful;-whether, in

intercourse with friends, I may have been not sincere;-whether I may have not mastered and practiced the

instructions of my teacher."

The Master said, "To rule a country of a thousand chariots, there must be reverent attention to business, and sincerity;

economy in expenditure, and love for men; and the

employment of the people at the proper seasons."

The Master said, "A youth, when at home, should be filial, and, abroad, respectful to his elders. He should be earnest and truthful. He should overflow in love to all, and cultivate the friendship of the good. When he has

time and opportunity, after the performance of these things, he should employ them in polite studies."

Tsze-hsia said, "If a man

withdraws his mind from the love of beauty, and

applies it as sincerely to the love of the virtuous; if, in serving his parents, he can exert his utmost strength; if, in serving his prince, he can

devote his life; if, in his intercourse with his friends, his

words are sincere:-although men say that he has not learned, I will certainly say that he has.

The Master said, "If the scholar be not grave, he will not call fourth any veneration, and his learning will not be solid.

"Hold faithfulness and

sincer ity as first principles.

"Have no friends not equal to yourself.

"When you have faults, do not fear to abandon them."

The philosopher Tsang said, "Let there be a careful attention to perform the funeral rites to parents, and let them be followed when long gone with the

ceremon ies of sacrifice;-then the virtue of the people will resume its proper excellence."

Tsze-ch'in asked Tsze-kung saying, "

When our master comes to any country, he does not fail to learn all about its government. Does he ask his information? or is it given to him?"

Tsze-kung said, "Our master is

benign , upright, courteous, temperate, and complaisant and thus he gets his information.

The master's mode of

asking information, * is it not different from that of other men?"

The Master said, "While a man's father is alive, look at the bent of his will; when his father is dead,

look at his conduct. If for three years he does not alter from the way of his father, he may be called filial."

The philosopher Yu said, "In

practicing the rules of propriety, a natural ease is to be prized.

In the ways prescribed by the ancient kings, this is the excellent quality, and in things small and great we follow them.

"Yet it is not to be observed in all cases. If one, knowing how such

ea se should be prized, manifests it, without regulating it by the rules of propriety, this likewise is not to be done."

The philosopher Yu said, "When agreements are made according to what is right, what is spoken can be made good. When respect is shown according to what is proper, one keeps far from shame and disgrace. When the parties upon whom a man leans are proper persons to be intimate with, he can make them his

guides and masters."

The Master said, "He who aims to be a

man of complete virtue in his food does not seek to gratify his appetite, nor in his dwelling place does he seek the appliances of ease; he is earnest in what he is doing, and careful in his speech; he

frequents the company of men

of principle that he may be rectified:-such a person may be said indeed to

love to learn."

Tsze-kung said, "What do you pronounce concerning the poor man who yet does not flatter, and the rich man who is not proud?"

The Master replied, "

They will do; but they are not equal to him, who, though

poor, is yet cheerful, and to him, who, though rich, loves the rules of propriety."

Tsze-kung replied, "It is said in the

Book of Poetry, 'As you cut and then file, as you carve and then polish.'-

The meaning is the same, I apprehend, as that which you have just expressed."

The Master said, "With one like Ts'ze, I can begin to talk about the odes.

I told him one point, and he knew its proper sequence."

The Master said, "I will not be afflicted at men's not knowing me; I will be afflicted that

I do not know men."

I will post your letter to the first.htm page of / and maybe send it to my private mail list ?/

There is some material under cooperative learning on the site -

The problem with evaluation - with goals or inspection methods (

See Deming) is that the process is what matters. Find cases that work and do case studies - educational evaluation using the medical model has not worked - does the treatment make a significant difference ? Too many interfering variables - THE TREATMENT (computers, etc) not strong enough or long enough so Process is what counts. See the Direct Instruction People - I will find the reference for how to do process vs. outcomes evaluation. This does not say OUTCOMES don't matter but the tree shall be known by its fruit - It's a difficult concept for people to understand - do you know the difference between item-sampled national assessment and a national test. Most people can't grasp the idea- of "quality" in process * at task, interested, come early and leave late, show eagerness etc. Take a look around the site - think and let me know is there is any other way I can help - education stuff is in ethos

Subject: Possible personal advice?

Hello, Peter,

I have read your posting on K+12 Admin, and earlier on Ednet, have enjoyed them and admire your intellect and the insight you bring to the list.

Speaking of such insight, I wonder what your thoughts are on students' uses of computers and student achievement. Could you be bothered to give me some advice?

Theory
I am very interested to explore the extent to which the theory of money can be dealt with within the domain of cognitive psychology.
It seems to me, psycholinguistically biased as I am, that all symbolic representations of value are fundamentally distinct from barter -granted that jewelry (gold, etc.) has perhaps evolved gradually as an increasingly pure system of value tokens. Of course, the more modern examples you mention are quite easily made compatible with representation in language. Is there some- thing newer than this?
Comment - a lot of Big time international bankers don't understand M3 and international credits, debits, transfers, - if you do we could make mega-bucks - Credit lines, cards, electronic transfers are NEW - the language can't keep up - the reference has no meaning in our experience like charm on a quark -
I am sure there is a huge literature on the matter in economics and anthropology; the latter field includes the emergence of pidgins as specialized instruments of trade.
