RE: ESOL - English for Speakers of Other Languages -

The electric classroom

For those of you that have followed this painstaking quest we have been trying for several years to do interactive remote education. For those that have followed the trends in distance education, you know that the goal of the Synergy Network is to share resources in order to support the R and D of an electronic classroom.

The classroom will be available to public and private schools, kindergarten to post- graduate, and commercial industrial training including corporate universities.

One more idea is ESOL, we will establish a ESOP home page area.

The domestic and international need for English as a Second Language maybe a opportunity for remote instruction using the dramatic new technology.

Microsoft Network is where it should be, finally.

They have 28,800 lines in most places and the ISDN line is the same cost as a time unlimited 28.8 connection. NOW everything connects to everything. MS is on the way to becoming a communications company with NBC - G.E. - and a wired network.

The NETMEETING is a killer application. It's phone, chat, ftp, flip chart, and will tie to OFFICE 97 - also get KEYVIEW for ease of using all kinds of formats.

Enabling Real-Time, Multimedia Communication over the Internet Updated: July 16, 1996

The Microsoft® ActiveX™ Conferencing platform consists of a suite of technologies that enable real-time, multiparty, multimedia communication over the Internet. In effect, these technologies and the associated interfaces turn each and every PC into a new kind of highly programmable and extensible telephone--a multimedia telephone capable not only of audio communication, but video and data communication as well.

For more information on Microsoft ActiveX conferencing, please see the Web pages below.

ActiveX Conferencing, in a nutshell

We've provided an overview of the Microsoft ActiveX Conferencing platform, user scenarios, and releases.

ActiveX Conferencing SDK

Beta 2 now available!

The ActiveX Conferencing Software Development Kit (SDK) provides thirteen functions for adding conferencing support to your application. Version 1.0 Beta 2 of the SDK is now available for downloading from this site. Please note that you need to install the Microsoft NetMeeting™ 1.0 (Beta 2) application (see below) to use the SDK.

I found I had to reload windows 95 from the CD to get SDX install correctly but now it seems fine.

RE: What business are you in ?

The neurological biochemical model of the nervous system, information and response has evolved to foster effective and dynamic interaction within a changing environment, to eat and not be eaten. To see what you need to see, to hear what you need to hear, to feel what you need to feel and react quickly.

The Internet mass communications business is just the same.

They are the electrical and chemical transmitters for global business and social interactions. How can we help social systems be more effective at doing what they do and do what they have never even dreamed of doing. It's a new art form, a now life form.

I was struck by the idea that every company has a style fixed where it was founded.

The railroads did not move into trucks or airplanes because they did not define themselves as in the transportation business but as organizations that ran railroads.

They carry their 19'th century management climate into the present. IBM has the flavor of the 1950's, Mr. Watson Sr. didn't want to do computers, just provide office machines, Jr. was allowed to try. Office products and sales/service continued to dominate IBM. Microsoft, Netscape, G.E., NBC, AT&T, the cable companies, the media giants, Time/Warner, McGraw Hill group, don't really know what business they are in and for good reason. It is more than doing what we now do better, stronger, higher and faster but do new things we have never done before.

Forbearance is required. As in TWA 800 case, with the stock market's up and downs, there is no quick easy answer.

The "media" thrives on quick, simple answers to complex problems. Every day they tell us why the market moved - and it's all BS, no one knows, there is not a simple answer, only there were more buyers than sellers or the other way around. Well, computer hardware, software, Internet communications, content, office operations, entertainment and news, ( which mushed together some time ago - so the Olympus and soap operas blend together in a mindless soup ), information, services such as travel, banking, buy and selling, manufacturing and distribution, education and training are all mushed together into a new SYNERGY.

SYNERGY is where everyone ( well almost everyone wins ). Ruth Benedict's concept was of societies that made participation worth while for most people, rather than the " powers to be" hedging it all and setting the rules to benefit themselves. Sharing, empathy, honest, liberty, equality, in the division of the spoils are functional attitudes vs. greed, uncaring, anti-social, individualist, slavery, domination etc.

The business you are in is SYNERGY, working with others to get the job done, the computer/telecommunications/Internet business is going to make that faster and let you do new things not done before.

The TOUR gives an idea of the methods we want to use in building the VIRTUAL CLASSROOM.

The system could be rented as the training facilities listed below ( hocf.htm is a list of corporate universities ) as well as to schools, colleges, and Universities around the world. It is unreasonable to expect every institution to build it's own electric classroom when rented space can be more up-to-date and have the interactive features needed.

To use a classroom on the Global Village School house is as easy as getting a site. We assign http://www.wiredbrain.net is synergy school but ... /yourclassroom could be you - there is VDO, real audio, BBS, work groups, FTP, directories, files, libraries, office space, administrative offices, book store, et al.

RE: A proposal: A classroom on the Internet

URL: http://synergy.turnpike.nettour.htm TITLE: GVS-IC

The Global Village Schools - an interactive classroom

GOALS: Development of a model prototype Internet classroom that will:

1.) Test teaching learning methods for different types of content and methods over the Internet and Intranets.

2.) Be a test bed of Research and development of interactive software using current state of the art systems and possible new developments as they come along.

LOGIC:

Rational, there is no one right way.

The concept of remote education and training is changing too quickly for most traditional technology transfer methods.

There is a clear and present need for experimental prototypes available to institutions and individuals to use, on which to test their specific application and gain the valuable experience they need before they plan and install their own systems or subsystems. On a continuous basis, there is an intense need to beta test a whole range of alternatives, encourage others to try them under different circumstances, such as bands capacities, equipment configurations and protocols .

It doesn't make sense for everyone to try to get on the internet with educational or training systems, completely on their own. PARTNERSHIP means synergy - the whole becomes more than the sum of the parts.

METHODS:

GVS-IC proposal calls for the establishment of sites that work together as a network using interactive systems for remote training and educational services.

There is about one Trillion (1000 billion) dollars of such activity world wide. GVS-IC's look for partners, from industry, government, trainers, non-profit organizations. We will work with the leading software and hardware firms, such as Netscape, Microsoft, Digital AltaVista, Corporate Universities ( see http://synergy.turnpike.net/ hocf.htm ) Support will come from the Office of Naval Research, Advanced Research Projects Agency DOD being the biggest training and educational institution in the world,

The Open University in Great Britain, Public Broadcasting here and in Australia and Canada, and others major and minor providers and users ( see the lists on hocf.htm and tour above. (WEBTV, CNN, VDO, etc.)

OPERATIONAL SYSTEMS:

There is no program plan only a process. For some idea of the commercial content look at our Best List.

The GVS-IC will have a board of directors made up of partners, sponsors, users, and members of the publics involved on a global basis. Grant proposals, requests for shared services, income from fees and licenses, all business affairs will be controlled by the board. Since it is impossible to forecast actual operational requirement, the board will hold funds in reserve, and project teams, individuals, internal or external organizations or individuals, will make proposals to the board.

The board can grant none, all or part of the resources requested. Performance standards are set with both parties agreement. Work will be done on a global basis. We have a test site but many locations could be used. GVS-IC could start with a few thousand or a million dollars.

There is no reason to have any physical facilities or common location. We will set up work-groups on remote networks.

VISION: unlimited .... what we can imagine today is all ready being done - we will be doing next year what we can not even imagine today. I could not have last year even thought of what is possible now and that will be just as true for this time next year !

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Reuters) -

"Intel Corp. and Microsoft Corp. said Wednesday they signed a licensing pact to develop technology to allow multimedia voice, video, and data conferencing calls on the Internet.

The computer and software giants said they would share protocols and technologies to insure universality of the system.

They are also working with Internet service providers to make it easy to find people online using Microsoft's User Location Service.

The companies said they saw directory systems and standard protocols as the two biggest challenges facing the project.

Microsoft said it plans to include the new technology in a new release of its NetMeeting software, which will be included in future versions of its Windows operating system.

Intel said it will include the conferencing capabilities in future products, and will work to integrate the technology into the basic personal computer platform.

Intel and Microsoft said they will jointly promote their standards to software developers, original equipment manufacturers, hardware vendors, and the conferencing and Internet services markets.

RE: Continuous Change:

The Global economic ecology

Life is change. SO...

cool sites http://www.ttalk.com/html/cool.links.html

think about it ! How can you and the community that supports your life giving systems rapidly adapt to the new world order ? We suggest ancient Sufi models of change, an old technique to create new visions. This is a real paradigm shift and requires new methods of thinking. Visit the site.. again it's in constant change.

The universe is expanding and evolving as it runs down. Life is a extremely dynamic and unstable form of anti-entropy, using energy to create complex ecologies, which requires constant activity to maintain themselves, grow and reproduce. As in the Red Queen from Alice in wonderland, all life forms have to run fast just to stay in place. Life is part of complex systems of communities, we do not go it alone, but our welfare depends on our community. Ecological open systems have counter-intuitive reaction including random interactions, fluctuations, expansions and extinction's which effect every member of every community ( species ).

SO...What is important to us, is perspective, the time and spatial context. How does it effect me and mine ? Global events and millions of people or years have little meaning.

So.. we are dealing in dog years. What took 5 - 7 years now happens in 1 year, what took a year happens in weeks. How fast is fast ? I think about the Internet and where we were last year.

SO .. What difference does it make to the evolution of life on the planet earth ? Think about it !

How fast is fast, how many changes are required before the essence has changed, how much is appearance, how much is really different ?

SO.. what does it mean to be into the "information age"?

The major areas of interest are office applications, how do global business change, as the Internet improves the efficiency of a hundred million enterprises around the world.

The Internet effects how business produce and distribute goods and services. We are all part of an expanding global economy.

SO.. central to every ecological system is how the members and communities earn a living. Earning a living over time is more complex that eat or be eaten, but involves how each element contributes to a life support system, including the soil, water and air. We are all part of the Gaia, a vast open living network of physical biology.

The Internet effects that basic life support system. As there always are, there will be more losers than winners in the short run.

Current Global economic understanding reflects a rather primitive and simplistic Darwinian machine-like balance of nature model. Economics is a dynamic form of the "life force", the energy and creativity which empowers communities ( and individual members of those communities ) to thrive and grow, while others do not. Energy is a form of drive and hope. Hope for ourselves, our families and our community. An oriental family that works 12 hours a day, 6 or 7 days a week, expresses the same passion that drives professions at a 70 hour week, the hope that supports ISO's, and new real estate developments are reflections of hope.

The new global thinking requires enterprise and creativity within a ecological community based model ( as pointed out by Joseph Schumpeter in the 1930's, Elise and Kenneth Boulding and Peter Drucher more recently ). A rising tide does not raise all ships, some sink.

So. need the constant improvements in community infra- structure, cables, pipes, schools, peace, taxes, regulation, conflict resolution, courts, cops and libraries to be able to survive in the global economy. Many institutions and places are doing a much better job at keeping up than others.

The struggle between Netscape and Microsoft is a case in point.

The public school system, colleges and universities are others, but keeping up effects every travel service, accountant, wholesale and retail business, telecommunications, entertainment, everyone.

If I replace all most everything in my P.C. about every 2 - 3 years, on a regular basis it is not what it was, and has only a few remains of days past. I guess it's the mother board that defines it's essence, but the appearance is it's video card and monitor. POINTCAST (www.pointcast.com) has regular updates it manages on it own.

The Olympics have appeared, along with 23 new nation states since 1992 and dozens of new sports. Political Geography is in constant flux.

The appearance of Netscape Mosaic, first with Win-Sock, then with windows 95 has changed most of the Internet surprising fast. Last year I was struggling with a local provider and it clearly was a difficult hobby not the consumer product it is today. Talk about Java was just on the horizon. a year ago there were somewhere about 30,000 URL's (now 300,000 ), with 20 million people on the globe with some form of web access ( more than half using on-line services CompuServe, AOL, Prodigy ).

Now world wide web access is about 60 million, ( 15% of the world wide 400 million PC's ) with 30 million in the USA.

The on-line services are flat or declining. An increasing percentage of usage is in office applications, just as I said they would be last year; AND it will almost double again by the end of next year, to 100 million or 20% of 500 million PC's, with maybe 10 million WEBTV's. Europe, Japan, Korea, Latin America are growing much faster than in the states. More than three billion dollars a month is being invested in new sites, technology, hardware, and services. More than 500,000 people are working in the business growing at 20,000 a month.

SO WHAT ? What difference does it make to the evolution of life on the planet earth ? I think the Internet will make a big difference not only in education, entertainment and news, but within the life support systems of the basic economic ecology. Just as the telephone, airplane, automobile, had major social effects so does the Internet, maybe more so because of speed.

SO.. think about it ! How can you and the community that supports your life giving systems rapidly adapt to the new world order ? We suggest ancient Sufi models of change, an old technique to create new visions. This is a real paradigm shift and requires new methods of thinking. Visit the site.. again it's in constant change.

There is no marvel because there is no statistical difference.

The explanation to the RASH of Black Church fires may be the same. No more boats or planes ( given the traffic ) disappear in the Bermuda triangle than anywhere else and the number of wooden church fires has not increased. In is all in the perspective.

Most of what happened to public education has the same problem there is no there there: (

RE:

The Candidate:

We all know the "system" doesn't work. Politics gets more and more unreal. We need a constitutional convention called by the states.

The reforms would be to design a more parliamentary form of government with responsible political parties, some form of proportional representation. We helped write a excellent constitution for the German Federal Republic, under General Clay's position during the occupation ( 1946 - 7 ) and we have the talent to reform ourselves. We can't expect the system in Washington to reform itself. We have to understand how the system really works and what it will take to change it.

We all have different talents. In public affairs there are those that are smart as legislators, with the complex skills of deal making, as managers, good at promoting their ideas, fixers and wheeler dealers, and some at being great candidates. Only Franklin Roosevelt was good at it all.

Bob Dole has to be one of the worse candidates in years.

Money and politics:

The goal of political reform should be to take away the profit motive in our election process.

The attempts to control money by regulation is hopeless because if individuals have personal power, the market will find a way around any rules. If we had disciplined national parties, individual candidates and office holders would not have the power to shake down organizations for money.

There is synergy between money and politics, and we end up with the best government money can buy.

RE:

The horn in the fire

http://quantumweb.c om/robin/disco.html /documents/ An anthropologist at the University told me that Laps when they hunt ( reindeer ) have lots of information and theories about the habits of their prey. Sometimes because of changes in climate the patterns of reindeer migration change. After trying what they know, after using magic, and the Laps are still hungry, they call in the wise man, consultant.

The shaman throws a reindeer antler into the fire. He examines the patterns made by the fire on the bone and that becomes their map for the hunting.

FEDERALIST No. 51

The Structure of the Government Must Furnish the Proper Checks and Balances Between the Different Departments From the New York Packet. Friday, February 8, 1788

HAMILTON or Madison http://www.eff.org/pub/Legislation/Freedom_Shrine/feder alist.papers

Ambition must be made to counteract ambition.

The interest of the man must be connected with the constitutional rights of the place. It may be a reflection on human nature, that such devices should be necessary to control the abuses of government. But what is government itself, but the greatest of all reflections on human nature? If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself.

The most important document in our civic religion, is the declaration of Independence. We observe today the universal truths it proclaims. I have hear people say there are no universal truths. Tao De Ching - Lao Tze Such small voices, but creation does not depend on their understanding the universe, that does not care much about what we think.

The truths. like Atoms, exist even if there was no planet earth, the issue is how to put ourselves in a proper relationship with the universal truth that do exists. It represents the evolution -- and resolution -- of the terrors and dilemmas of Step penwolf, Demian, and Siddhartha.

<BR><B><h4> The Sign of the Mason's

The American system is based on the 18th century ideology of the Blue Lodge ( Scottish Rites ) of the Free and Associated Masons.

The Lodge masters; Franklin and Otis, the founders, George Washington, Jefferson, Madison and Hamilton, both Adams, Jay and all the other signers of the Declaration of Independence, understood obedience and freedom from the Hermetic philosophy of their lodges. Without understanding how the Mason's organized and conducted the rebellion, the events will not make sense and you might miss the whole point of the modern world.

The ideal is powerful as the shot heard around the world. People can manage their own affairs and behave reasonably in a civil society without Kings, Priests, and official dogmas.

From the New York Packet.

Friday, November 23, 1787.

http://www.eff.org/pub/Legislation/Freedom_Shrine/federalist.pape rs

MADISON ON-LINE:

To the People of the State of New York:

AMONG the numerous advantages promised by a well constructed Union, none deserves to be more accurately developed than its tendency to break and control the violence of faction.

The friend of popular governments never finds himself so much alarmed for their character and fate, as when he contemplates their propensity to this dangerous vice. He will not fail, therefore, to set a due value on any plan which, without violating the principles to which he is attached, provides a proper cure for it.

The instability, injustice, and confusion introduced into the public councils, have, in truth, been the mortal diseases under which popular governments have everywhere perished; as they continue to be the favorite and fruitful topics from which the adversaries to liberty derive their most specious declamations.

that our governments are too unstable, that the public good is disregarded in the conflicts of rival parties, and that measures are too often decided, not according to the rules of justice and the rights of the minor party, but by the superior force of an interested and overbearing majority.

THE STYLES - TEMPERAMENT - GAME Come on play the game: I will help you set up files for YOUR group. First Take the Sorter

Or better yet: http://sunsite.unc.edu /jembin/mb.pl is the inventory site: In addition to evaluating your temperament type, it provides a description of the type as well as a list of the famous and infamous that share the type. Reading level is high and we've had only limited success using it with students, but works really well for adults.

The temperament sorter from Please Understand Me by David Keirsey and Bates is a clue to how you react to the world and your learning style. A simple method of sorting by style. You are not one self; but many selves - depends on conditions, diet, environment, mood, etc. PICK A GROUP - then SEND ME E-MAIL with you name and group. Or those with FTP can transfer their notes and comments to ftp you will get your own user and password.

Then each group can leave notes that can be opened in the files by CLICKING on your group name on the MAP on http://www.wiredbrain.net/chart.htm

RE: A proposal for the classroom of the future:

For a tour of the future of teaching on the Internet look at our new TOUR GUIDE

I want to find about $100,000 to build a prototype Internet classroom. We will take a tour of what that classroom may look like but first the administrative idea. When the technology is changing as fast as the Internet ( I don't believe any technology, even Military has moved so fast - but in both cases the motivation is the same kill or be killed, survival depends on your tools and organization ) it is impossible for me to write a detailed plan, submit it through the grants cycle and then if I get funded in a year, then do what I had suggested a year ago. So we need a contract with NSF, PBS, Digital ( AltaVista ), Microsoft, IBM. Motorola, Intel, Carnegie Endowment for the Advancement of Teaching or other public or private fund to support us.

The contract forms a management board, decisions are made and money is spent. Someone out there knows how to do this.

It is quite possible to get donations, beta software or have to pay high prices. A VDO server could be free or $ 10,000 or some clone could come along. We also need a real radio site, and hot Java scripting. We have the site www.wiredbrain.net.

The prototype will be better than anything I've seen out there but I may discover a whole new concept tomorrow.

The model I have in mind uses the graphic and search of AltaVista, the sounds of real audio and the pictures of VDO. It's a living and connected textbook.

The board controls the expenditures. We may cost more or less then any plan could predict.

The important point of not getting kick backs, paying bribes, stealing, and being effective is more likely than under the standard grant conditions.
