The structure of knowledge and search technology on the Internet:
How
we get information has always been important. From the invention of language,
writing, printing, telecommunications, information transfer has always
structured human social economic and political life. The hyperlink created
a new way of making connections.
Now the real time search has gone a step beyond a fixed set of connections.
The "living web" is
created at the moment it is used.
A
few studies have been done on the effect of computers on learning, motor
coordination
and even social skills, but they are missing the greater point. The
Internet is an invention more like democracy, religion or mass transportation.
It affects us less as individuals than on our functioning as a society.
