SYNERGY-NET on http://www.wiredbrain.net/ TO: Corporate Training Institute on-line http://www.teleport.com/~ctio/ RE: Basic Supervision; Fifteen units in modules updated Internet as life form below I would like your input on the most critical elements of management/supervision training. The five skills the new supervisor (or for that matter all supervisors, teachers, parents need ) are: PERSPECTIVE: What is me and what is out there ? Be sure you are being objective while understanding the emotional content of what is going on. But first I have to learn to step back in order to leap forward - get enough distance so I can see the forest for the trees. ALTERNATIVES: First understand and then be understood ( Stephen Covey and the Gospel ) Understanding others and their attitudes and personalities. Skills in giving neural feedback so they understand that you understand. EVIDENCE: Basic action research, what is going on here ? The cycles of change and positive and negative feedback loops. Basic research design in making objective comparisons, simple statistical methods and charts. ( The Deming methods ) RELATIONSHIPS to the BIG PICTURE: The higher goals, the meaning of what we do and the way we do it. Being honest, reflective, and making connections. Development of a profound philosophy. WHAT DIFFERENCE DO I (WE) MAKE: This is an on-going process ( Be patient God is not finished with us yet ) Quality grows from inside out - can not be imposed by inspections, rules, tests. My family, community, nation and company all matter. Character matters, trust, empathy, love and the peace of understanding. Values of the workplace and quality moments with employees, supervisors, clients, suppliers, and the community. We will be the best we can be. A lot of people are good at what they do. They then get promoted into management/supervision because of their on-the-job skills and education and training in what they do. As a manager or supervisor there is a new package of skills needed. These skills include: PEOPLE SKILLS; firm, fair and friendly Understanding different types, placement strategies motivation, informal groups and gold-bricks communications, more effective supervision conflict resolution, learning from conflict work-groups, the key to performance PLANNING AND ORGANIZING SKILLS Creativity Innovation Time management delegation MBO - management by objectives Systems thinking Quality management PERT - program evaluation and review techniques BUDGET AND MONEY MANAGEMENT SKILLS Benefit/cost methods Time and current costs ( discount rates ) The business plan Estimates Charts Gant, organizational and others EQUIPMENT and SUPPLIES amortization and evaluation getting bids and scoring methods for objective judgments FORMS and PROCEDURES, hiring, firing, promoting, evaluation, job- descriptions, ordering, maintenance of rules, health and safety, anti-bias, sexual harassment, on the job training, and specific company policies. http://www.wiredbrain.net/ Hi Peter: Wow! You've got all the qualifications. I also like to ask if you might be interested becoming a member of the CTIO curriculum board. We're looking for individuals with extensive backgrounds in education and training for the board. For more information check out more details at: http://teleport.com/~ctio/pages/details.htm The next step is for you to determine which course(s) you'd like to develop. There is a partial list of potential courses on the CTI Online "courses page," but feel free to dream up some topics of your own. A few potential instructors wanted to know how to come up with topics. I recommended to them that they visit their local bookstore and look at book titles in the business/self-help/computer sections to come up with ideas. But, with your background, I'll bet you'll have no trouble with subjects. We're asking instructors to have at least one course ready to be posted on our courses page by the August 1st grand opening. So... visit the page above. Let me know the subject you're going to develop...and go at it! Keep in touch. If you have any questions, comments, concerns, please let me know.
