WEEK 9: CLIMATE: NEEDS AND CONFLICT: SOCIALIZATION & CHANGE High vs. low energy in groups is caused by the climate. Groups have norms - styles - folkways and mores - some of these customs produce highly functional families, groups, organizations, and societies. Our society faces a long term crisis of a competitive international market place. The skills of our people and their ability to work together is critical to our standard of living. Other societies not only work harder, but smarter, and in a more cooperative manner. Internal conflict wastes energy and prevents high productivity and focus on quality. The issue is power. The goal is collaboration. People have needs for belonging, esteem, and self- actualization (Maslow). People are motivated to satisfy these needs. Groups can turn people on or turn them off. This class is designed to motivate. Does it? How? Why not? What does turn you on? Is there some conflict? How should we deal with conflict? How does your family deal with conflict? What is the climate of this organization? of any other organization you know? APPLY THE X, Y, AND Z THEORIES - FACTORY, HUMAN RELATIONS, AND COOPERATIVE MODELS. VISIT THE OTHER GROUPS AND TAKE A MEASURE OF THEIR CLIMATE!
