My wife works for the school board - I am a professor of Government and Social Science - BA U of Chicago - EdM Harvard - Ph.D. from Florida State - I started this site in 1994 - 5
The list has crashed many times and only partly recovered - people sign up at hotbot - my interest is how technology - and our understanding will come out in the future. I have been interested in ecology and politics and futures since the Club of Rome report - where I worked on some of the systems models at Sloan school and with Shell Oil research.
first on our own 28 bps modem, them a local server, then on a company in
The idea in the 1960's was that exponential growth would ( and does in most natural systems ) would end in a crash.
The 1970's suggested that this maybe right as far a oil and maybe food, water and other critical materials under the population resource
squeeze. I worked on the cable industry and saw how the synergy between satellites and super stations made this economic.
My teaching of Government, Public Administration and policy - in Wis. California and the West Indies raised issues of how technology gets spread and what is economic where and when - My program at Harvard was about "Human Resource" plans as part of economic development - work with the Peace Corps in Africa about what maybe needed where in terms of training and education - and how to provide it. How to make schools and commercial education work for the society, and for the individual ( return on investments ) depends on delivery as well as population and labor market forecasts. We ended up with supply-demand models with a realization that the market is about a good as poor forecasting and slow ( really slow ) public planning. Since commercial training is more responsive - teaching truck drivers, repair workers, etc. public vouchers are a good idea - let the market work ( under some regulation to control fraud ) applies to many parts of the public agenda - privatization of benefits - and private service providers.
It is of great interest why the crash models were wrong - or are they - was it only a matter of time.
The new economy maybe a great deal less material demanding - and more human resource demanding - but water, oil, and other materials are still critical.
Baby Born Under Bombs:
I was born in Barcelona during a complex three sided war in the Generaladad de
Catatonia involved the anarchist, the republicans, the communist, and the
nationalist (Fascist). ( See Orwell's Homage to Catatonia). I am the only
native born America anarchist since the anarchist were the official government
of a short lived independent Catatonia. My father, Irving Peter Pflaum, was
the UPI reporter in Madrid during a three year battle, mother, Melanie Lowenthal,
was with my older brother and her parents in Barcelona. In a month or so
we took the last train from Spain to France and stayed in a small town near
the border - Collioure that remains today a charming artist colony and fishing
village.
Irv returned to Chicago to become the foreign editor of the Times (then
the Sun-Times). I went to the University of Chicago in the last days of the
Roberts Hutchin's program.
I receive a form of a classical education, organized on Aristotle principles.
There was a common assumption that the education of leaders involved the
transmission of Western Civilization, culture, attitudes, this required the
values suited to a Roman Gentleman, a British Officer, or an American
Scholar.
I did further studies at the University of London, LSE. I taught school
and community college in St. Albans and Turin Italy. I started teaching college
at the Inter-American University in San German, Porto Rico. I went to summer
schools at Harvard and completed a Ed. M. in Education and Economic Development.
During the integration of the south I was a graduate student at Florida State
and a consultant on integration of schools. I spent a year with the Legislature
working on issues of Higher Education. My
Thesis was on Geographic Data Base
systems and their application to drawing school zones. (Ph.D.)
I then have worked in a variety of Colleges and Universities working with
students from people just out of High School through Graduate School. I learned
a lot about process doing industrial training for private business and public
agencies. I have run hundred of
I learned about learning through Gestalt training which required a profound
personal change.
The physical and psychological
(mind- body) connection became
obvious. I have practiced the art of setting the condition where groups can

RE: getting along? To figure out how be welcomed and help fit in. "
RE: How do we know what we are talking about?"
Sometime it is written in full English sentences and has some very interesting
ideas that I think people would like to talk with you about.
Doesn't this depend on your goals? Are you making assumptions about what
I want and why? Do I want to fit in? Why - I am trying to develop some ideas
and am looking for people to talk to about them. Maybe I shouldn't be on
a list since I am not interested in personal general conversations. I tried
to make my own list - with grievous results - People wanted off - or on and
it was too much to handle - I have one old times list which is getting this
- I have some suggestions which I think will help you fit in and enjoy it
more. Well that is a sore point, but someone from the list tried to damage
me -
They complained to the management of the free service I use - and came
close to getting me kicked off. I think this is mean, and I am not much
interested it further contacts with people like that. I have sent in my unsub
- on the other hand - you have been great - I got kicked off EDNET (too much
to handle in any case - non-substance - EDPOLYN - didn't conform to academic
standards - BOZO they called me - etc. Its fun and it hurts -
I am the only native born American Anarchist. When I was born (of American
Parents = native born) in Barcelona which was at the time the Generaldad
de Catalona - run by syndicatist (See Homage to Catalona by Orwell) My parents
were http://www.wiredbrain.net
documents JOURNALists. Irving Peter Pflaum, was bureau chief in Madrid during
the Spanish Civil War,
Then Foreign Editor of the Chicago Sun-Times. Melanie
Pflaum is a magazine writer and has a dozen novels published in England and
New Zealand and by St. Martins press in USA.
I grew up in Chicago and went to the UofC under the integrated liberal arts
program. Went to the London School of Economics and taught in Europe - then
Puerto Rico (IAU) Ed.M. from Harvard (HGSE) and Ph.D. in Government -
My interest is human resources and economic development. I was in Haiti,
and have been other places. I have taught Public Administration and public
policy for several decades. (Mankato, Wisconsin, Cal. St. Long Beach, CVI
St Thomas Pflaum) and what you liked about that area, what your family was like,
where you currently live and what you like about that area.
I now live in East Central Florida - almost on the beach - its quiet - If
you attend church (UU or not), tell about your church and your congregation,
and what you like about it. St. Peter the Fisherman Episcopal Church -
progressive traditionalist - good people - I like the Episcopal book of common
payer - and they do not try to open windows into your soul but respect you
own way of relating with the divine.
If you are married or in long term relationship, tell about your partner
and what you like about him, her, or them. My Wife Mary Anne Watkins Pflaum,
grew up here - she is a public school English teacher. (Now is Spain with
Grandmother) My wife what do I like? She is one great mother - a good friend
and a good writer - as E.B. White says in Charlots Web, you don't often find
a good friend and a good writer. I am not - but get better with a lot of
work. I just say what I think - and I know what I mean - I can't see the
difference between then and that sometimes - Taught to read wrong - and English
is not my first language. Sara Lynn 12 - and Blaine 8 go to a SDA small school.
Where we discovered how much better small is! (Small is less than 50, less
than 25, a few years ago 8, that's a good size for the one-room school. (Mary
Anne did a
Thesis on small schools)
Tell what you do for money, what you do because you enjoy it, and what you
do because you think it is important. Very little - and have little - teach
at local community college - social sciences - have developed a workbook
(300 pg or more) of exercised et al - I have a few of last years copies -
SASE of about $2.85 will get you a copy. I love my teaching, they don't have
problems understanding me. I do cooperative active learning so its fun. Tell
about the school you work in. You wrote "Only God is certain" Different
people on UUS-L have very different concepts of God. Some don't even use
"God" at all in their religious life.
They would be interested in hearing
how you think of God, even though they don't think about God in the same
way that you do. No answer - that's between me and my God - I will discuss
religion but I see no point in personal beliefs that others don't care to
understand. (And I not sure I do)
"Mankind's moral sense is not a strong beacon light, radiating outward to
illuminate in sharp outline all that it touches. It is, rather, a small candle
flame, casting vague and multiple shadows, flickering and sputtering in the
strong winds of power and passion, greed and ideology. But brought close
to the heart and cupped it one's hands, it dispels the darkness and warms
the soul." (2) Most people are bewildered by the amount of information that
you are posting.
They are unable to digest it. I suggest that after the day
that you post your introduction, you only ONE new message a day. Make it
fairly short (no more than 20 lines quoted from somewhere else) and use the
time that you have spent in gathering and posting so many things to set fourth
clearly what you like about the post and what it means to you.
People have had difficulty reading the commentary that you put into your
recent posts. Perhaps if you take more time in writing the commentary, people
will be able to understand you and what is important to you about it. Use
full sentences and revise it as many times as it takes until you think it
will be clear to people who don't know you at all.(3) You could also post
ONE message a day which responds to something that someone else posted. People
are interested in having a conversation with you. To make that work, you
have to hear something they say and acknowledge it in your message. Don't
just paste in a copy, but paraphrase it so that the person who wrote it knows
that you understood it (or didn't understand it. ;-) Tell them whether you
agree with it or not, and why. Tell them what it means in your own life.
If you have something more to add to the discussion, add that.
Again, make your reply posts short. Make them 20-30 lines, at most. If you
can do it with only 5+10 lines, try that. Again, take plenty of time to rewrite
it for as long as it takes to make it easy to read for someone who doesn't
know you at all, and doesn't know what you think and why. Again, be sure
to use full sentences.(4) Take "Is This OK? Anyone not want to READ this?
Do not flame! "out of your signature block, If you try to follow these
guidelines, I promise to read your messages and make more suggestions as
I see more of what you write. I also think that you will be able to interact
with other people on the list with more satisfaction for you and for them.
Please write back to let me know that you got this message, and to say whether
you are willing to try this.
