The class, Internet 101, is going. Several people have called me on the Net meetings program. ( Europe, Asia, as well as from the States ) We have used voice, chat, whiteboard, ftp, drop and drag and share - collaborate. Several have managed to leave notes on the message board.

The next step is a home page.

There is no time pressure, but we keep moving ahead for those that want to work at a faster pace. We are LOOKING FOR CREDIT - any ideas about getting College credit ? We are looking for at least a 40% / 60% split, the college collects fees and pays GVS 60 %. I guess it's worth a lot more if your pay from $125 to $1250 and get official credit.

The class should count for in-service points for teachers, accountants, and other professionals. If you get the 100 points required to finish you do get a certificate and can put it on your resume as continuing education; workshops and seminars. More important you can refer people to your home page and show them your work.

There are at least 20,000 open positions for people with Internet experience - paying 50% more than jobs with the same qualifications in other areas. Almost any job, librarians, teachers, travel and banking, real estate, insurance, sales, et al benefit from Internet Experience.

RE: A proposal: A classroom on the Internet RE: Active vs. passive learning: I have in http://www.wiredbrain.net/ethos/ dozens of papers about active and cooperative learning.

The difference can be seen in our NEW Internet 101 class ( http://www.wiredbrain.net/internet101/internet10 1/htm ) I shouldn't, and can't tell you about it, but you HAVE to do "IT" for yourself. TAKE INITIATIVE ! The structure of knowledge has changed but the knowledge transfer business ( schools, colleges, industrial training ) has not.

The business is based on books, libraries, degrees, the storage and transfer of information by gate keepers.

The structure of the knowledge business since the 13'th century HAS BEEN, I know it, ( Harvard, Yale and Mr. Moose, Dr. Know-it- all ) and you don't: so I have power over you. I get big fees, status, money, etc. But if what I "know" is here today and gone tomorrow - and I don't know IT any more. I loose control of information and my prized position in society, and slowly my market is gone, GOOD GRIEF CHARLIE BROWN - I can't deliver the goods any more. You see, I can't store up information, then down load into your head. TOO SLOW, too likely to dump something you don't need or want. BUT MAINLY you have to learn by doing - it's not only the best way - it's the only way. You don't have time for 300 page manuals, which are out of date before they get to you. THIS is the new world order - fast, smart, independent, changing, flexible, and a bloody pain. Just get Microsoft Net Meeting going and they release beta 3, with a different web meeting board. Net Meeting and Object program are as BIG as mosaic two years ago. Multi-dimensional file management, both INTRANETS ( on your system ) and INTERNETS on the WWW, is so powerful it will BLOW you away. That's what Gates and Netscape are talking about - but you have to DO IT to believe IT, and know what IT is all about. If you don't it's just talk. And the band plays on in public and higher education... business is catching on -

The Catch-on factor - is rather important in evolution .. survival and reproduction of information, genetic or computer applications. So what is my role as TEACHER - guide, helper, and group dynamics expert - a learning technician. A person experienced in the conditions with promote learning. We will take a tour of what that classroom may look like but first the administrative idea. When the technology is changing as fast as the Internet ( I don't believe any technology, even Military has moved so fast - but in both cases the motivation is the same kill or be killed, survival depends on your tools and organization ) it is impossible for me to write a detailed plan, submit it through the grants cycle and then if I get funded in a year, then do what I had suggested a year ago. So we need a contract with NSF, PBS, Digital ( AltaVista ), Microsoft, IBM. Motorola, Intel, Carnegie Endowment for the Advancement of Teaching or other public or private fund to support us.

The contract forms a management board, decisions are made and money is spent. Someone out there knows how to do this. It is quite possible to get donations, beta software or have to pay high prices. A VDO server could be free or $ 10,000 or some clone could come along. We also need a real radio site, and hot Java scripting. We have the site www.wiredbrain.net.

The prototype will be better than anything I've seen out there but I may discover a whole new concept tomorrow.

The model I have in mind uses the graphic and search of AltaVista, the sounds of real audio and the pictures of VDO. It's a living and connected textbook.

The board controls the expenditures. We may cost more or less then any plan could predict.

The important point of not getting kick backs, paying bribes, stealing, and being effective is more likely than under the standard grant conditions.
